Steam crashing [FIXED]

Today i tried to reinstall steam after a fresh windows install and carry on playing the great game Portal, however after copying my 42G steamapps folder steam would load and just sit in the systray. If I clicked it nothing would happen and the steam icon would just disappear from the systray. I googled for some answers…

First up.. try deleting your clientregistry.blob file in the steam folder then relaunch steam, it will make a new one, didnt work for me.

Next… delete all the .dll files in the steam folder, on relaunch steam will download fresh ones, still didnt work for me.

After trial and error I found the file that was causing the crashes! it was this one…winui.gcf in the steamapps folder, steam created a new one and now all is well 🙂

winui.gcf
winui.gcf

I hope someone googles this and finds it useful!
